From a tailgate and pie-eating contest Sunday, Oct. 3, through the football game Saturday, Oct. 8, Nebraska's inaugural homecoming in the Big Ten was a success.
More than 750 alumni, students and friends enjoyed Football Friday in the Holling Garden, followed by the homecoming parade, for which they had prime viewing seats. The homecoming pep rally, sponsored by the Nebraska Alumni Association and Scarlet Guard, followed the parade, drawing 1,500 people into the street in front of the Wick Alumni Center. Scarlet Guard and ASUN presidents Sarah Schroeder and Lane Carr welcomed the crowd and directed the inaugural Big Ten balloon release.
The highlight of the pep rally was the second annual Homecoming Jester competition, also sponsored by the alumni association, featuring 21 students who vied for the title of "Nebraska's Biggest Fan." Alex Lucier of Knoll Hall won the honor and was rewarded with a live shot on Husker Vision during the third quarter of the homecoming football game the next day. Jester celebrity judges included Mark Askren, Jessica Erstad, Tommie Frazier, Larry Routh and a fifth vote via the student body.
Throughout the week, the alumni association's Scarlet Guard competed in the Registered Student Organization division of homecoming, winning first place in Monday Night Live with an a cappella skit and taking their division in the Jester competition with contestant John-Emmett Mahon.
Skip Hecox and Emily Koopmann were crowned homecoming king and queen during halftime of the Nebraska vs. Ohio State game. Each received a university medallion, flowers, an autographed football and, courtesy of the alumni association, an official University of Nebraska–Lincoln class ring.
Congratulations to the 2011-2012 Homecoming Jester, Alex Lucier of Knoll Hall!
